Job Summary

The Financial Analyst position is a key role in fulfilling the expansive analytic needs of the Department of Internal Medicine. Working in a collaborative team environment this position will be responsible for supporting monthly, quarterly, and ad hoc reports. Representative data types include: provider productivity, patient access to care, operational efficiency, patient volume forecasting, and some financial metrics. Duties include driving operational improvements through communication and ownership of operational processes, improving reporting processes through rigorous data validation and standardization. Excellent communication, project management, and attention to detail are required.


▪Prepares and interprets management information and other financial reports.

▪Analyzes financial documents, statistical data, historical data and presents to and interprets for management.

▪Analyzes trends and possible consequences.

▪Recommends and implements improvements that affect the department, physicians, providers, and clinics.

▪Support new product development.

▪Participate within a multidisciplinary team across multiple locations. Develop and maintain effective and collaborative working relationships with a wide variety of internal colleagues and customers.

▪Work with the analytics team to devise and implement strategies.

▪Provide data and financial analysis to support department, as well as hospital and health sciences management.

▪Perform program and operations analysis.

▪Implement and potentially lead performance improvement initiatives.

▪Assume ownership for working with appropriate groups to address challenges or resolve issues as needed.

Problem Solving

This position has the authority to independently determine the type and nature of analysis to be used to obtain the desired information or results, including data to be collected, analysis methods, presentation, format, and report structure.

Representative challenges of this position include organizing and prioritizing multiple projects, determining the best course of action or appropriate resources needed to complete the project or address a problem, obtaining valid data and creating clear and understandable reports that reflect the data being sought.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Business, Accounting, Healthcare Administration, or a related field or equivalency; plus two years of related experience. Also required are a thorough knowledge of established accounting principles and practices; spreadsheet and database skills; knowledge of statistics and demonstrated analytical,problem solving, human relation and effective communication skills required.

An advanced degree, such as a Master’s of Business Administration, is preferred. Certain positions may require familiarity with hospital billing systems, Medicare and insurance reimbursement regulations, etc.

Candidate exhibits a thorough knowledge of database processes and functions including basic SQL knowledge, expertise with hospital and professional billing systems, detailed knowledge of spreadsheet skills, and common statistical analysis practices. Demonstrated experience in establishing working relationships with staff, vendors, and customers. Excellent communication skills, team relations, and time management skills. Knowledge of Epic systems, and business intelligence applications preferred.

Distinguished candidates will exhibit awareness of data collection processes (the gathering of data), information analysis (transformation of data to understand its meaning), and vision (the capacity, governance, and process to do something with the information).

This position is considered Category IIA : Not required on campus and has the ability to telework remotely for the duration of the University of Utah’s response to COVID -19.
